Fundraiser benefits children at Nazareth Home
March 20, 2011
The nonprofit We Believe Project held an all-day fundraiser this month at Schererville's Red Robin Gourmet Burgers restaurant, with all proceeds going to Nazareth Home in East Chicago.
Ten percent of food sales March 10 were donated to the foster home when customers presented a We Believe Project flier to their server. Restaurant customers also donated $750 and disposable diapers, toys and blankets for the children - infants to age 6 - cared for at the home. Donors received a chance to win a $50 gift card.
"It was so nice to see some of the members of the foster home come in, it made my day to see how happy and excited they were," said Egle Vaitiekute, We Believe Project co-founder.
Shift Manager Lisa Luce, of Red Robin, said the March 10 event was one of the biggest fundraisers the restaurant has hosted.
Nazareth Home, a ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, is a licensed foster home that provides a loving, caring and stable beginning for medically compromised infants and childrenĀ referred by the Indiana Department of Child Services. We Believe Project was founded a year ago by Vaitiekute and Sylwia Pilat, a Purdue University Calumet graduate and student, respectively, when they spent the summer traveling to several states as volunteers for the needy.
"I couldn't be happier with how things turned out, it's so great to see how many people came to support the cause and who believe in us," said Vanessa Mahns, communications coordinator for We Believe Project.
"There's a disconnection with people who want to help and the ability to get out and volunteer, something needs to be able to bridge the two, and that's the We Believe Project," said guest Melissa Ramos, adding she is happy to see young adults interested in volunteering and trying to get others involved.
