Chef tasting and auction to benefit Nazareth Home
October 13, 2011
HAMMOND | When the doors of the atrium of the Hammond Federal Courthouse open Oct. 20, the foster children of Nazareth Home in East Chicago will be the beneficiaries of the evening's festivities.
There to greet guests at 5:30 p.m. at 5400 Federal Plaza will be Jean Bowman, Nazareth Home's new director/foster mother, who oversees the medically at-risk children who are referred by the Department of Child Services due to medical challenges or removal from families unable to provide appropriate care.
In its ninth year, the Nazareth Home Gala Chef Tasting and Live and Silent Auction supports the foster home's 24-hour licensed care for infants and children up to 6. Proceeds will be dedicated to operational costs of the home that was founded in 1993 and is a ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ religious order.
Featured will be seven area chefs from premier eateries who are donating their time, gourmet food and talent for the occasion: Chef Tim Healy of Ameristar Casino, East Chicago; Chef Carl Lindskog of Amore' Restaurante, Crown Point: Chef Jim Latsoudis of Atlas Catering and The Jury Box, Hammond; Chef Randy Berg from Ciao Bella Ristorante, Schererville; Chef Jack Mix of Comfort's Catering, St. John; the featured chef from Gamba Ristorante, Merrillville; and Chef Cheryl Molenda of the Inn at Aberdeen, Valparaiso.
Tom O'Donnell will serve as auctioneer for an array of offerings that include a Tacori bracelet, a trip to New Mexico, a Be-a-race-car-driver-for-a-day adventure, Chicago Bears tickets, and unusual dining experiences - including dinner for 10 with Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen in his chambers.
Those in attendance also will hear the story of a foster child, Cavin, as told by his adoptive parents after their story is shown via DVD during the fundraiser.
